I helped build the pyramids but I’m sworn to Ra not to tell how it was done. The rest is history.

I can't think of anything historic i've witnessed first hand.
Sort of sports related, but probably not in the way you were thinking...My dad was born and raised in Huntington, WV and was still living there in 1970 when the plane crashed killing nearly the entire Marshall University football team, coaching staff, and some fans. He didn't witness the actual plane crashing, but the aftermath and devastation to a small community and all the family friends affected.
There is a movie about this now with Matthew McConaughey called We Are Marshall

The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated 39 miles above Texas on February 1, 2003, a catastrophe during the ship's landing descent. Actually had a large piece fall into the bank parking lot.

Rolling Stones 1978 superdome. Set the record for indoor concert.
I marched with Buddy's Broad's after the Saints won the NFC championship.

I’ve been witnessing the slow destruction of the greatest nation on earth from within since I’ve been born. I’ve also witnessed it happen at an accelerated rate I never thought possible over the last ten years or so.

Not any more, and it was 1981, I was there.

Last Saturday's George Strait concert became the largest indoor concert in North America as 104,793 people packed AT&T Stadium. It broke a 33-year record previously set by The Rolling Stones in New Orleans in 1981, when an estimated crowd of 87,500 people crammed into the Superdome.

VERY VERY VERY SMALL part of 9/11. I worked for Worldcom on 9/11. When the towers fell, it took out a Verizon building that held the highest density of communications equipment in the world. My office was working furiously to restore vitual pathways to ensure landlines and cellular service worked in Lower Manhatten.
We sent some of our senior guys up to NYC after the attacks to help Verizon wire temporary solutions into place.

I was also in town (Bogalusa) when the Gaylord chemical plant had a rail car explode. People still getting paid from that lawsuit.
I was one of the first people to know this happened because my dad worked there and I was ~1.5 miles away when it happened.

Myself and many others were gathered to watch ULL implode an old dorm that morning. We thought we heard a boom but it wasn't the building.

April 15, 2019.
I watched the fire at Notre Dame in Paris right from the beginning. I posted a thread on the Travel Board about it that night.

Ducked when I saw I was in the guy-on-the-grassy-knoll's line of fire...

I got that, you were there in '78.
I, meaning me, was there in 1981, when the supposed record was set with an estimated 87,500 in attendance.

Saw Neil Armstrong after the moon landing in the parade his hometown threw for him.

If the 1978 Stones concert counts, I was there too. Fun night.

I visited that cathedral in '94 and had fond memories of it (and the whole Paris trip.)
When I saw the fire on tv, I felt sick to my stomach at the historical loss and my personal connection to it. What's crazy is that another member of the '94 group (who I hadn't talked with since the trip) called me up to see if I had heard about the fire. It impacted her as well as if we were still there.
