We’ll, at least they’re cognizant of their glaring weakness

quote:

When the Angels address a weakness, they don't waste any time. Los Angeles used all 20 of its picks in the 2021 MLB draft on pitchers.

One prep player—Mason Albright from IMG Academy—was selected and 19 college pitchers had their names called by the Angels.

Despite their two-way star in Shohei Ohtani, the Angels need to make pitching improvements. The team currently ranks 26th in team ERA at 4.90 and only has two pitchers with an ERA lower than 3.00 who have pitched more than 30 innings.

Ohtani and Patrick Sandoval are the only two starting pitchers under contract with the Angels beyond the 2021 season.

Not really. Why would you want to re-sign shitty pitching?

Where did the Dodgers end up at? They had drafted 15 straight pitchers

I’d like to see a team try this consistently and just alternate between pitchers and field players every draft and see what happens

True but how does a professional organization get in that situation?

Well the Angels have most of their offense locked up long-term or on rookie deals

Trout
Ohtani
Rendon
Walsh
Marsh
Adell
Fletcher

They need help in pitching and hopefully some of these guys can make it to the majors fairly quick either as a spot starter or in relief.

I don't hate this strategy at all. Draft college pitching and pick up your skill position talent internationally. I'd do the same thing if I were a GM.

Considering how hit and miss pitchers are compared to other positions, this is kind of like buying a handful of scratch off tickets.

You may not hit the jackpot but you will probably come out about even.

Seems like it should be the opposite due to the risk involved with pitchers. Get a bunch of cheap international lottery ticket pitchers and draft/develop as many bats as possible. The surplus could be used in trades or if you get enough cheap homegrown position players to the majors you could spend on pitching in free agency.

Just tread that pitchers were easier to evaluate during Covid so GMs felt more comfortable picking pitchers.
