Anyone ever wonders what the baseball program woulda looked like if we would hired Robichaux from ULL after Skip Retired instead of hiring Smoke?

Tony left us way too soon. A great coach and man.

Would have been a Homerun hire. Knew his shite and was a class act.

Was talking to my friend about this yesterday. Coach Robe built the ULL program almost literally from the ground up and was a damn good coach. Only thing I wonder is if his recruiting would have been up to LSU standards. I also know that Robe loved the lafayette area and money wasn't his driving factor so I dont think he ever would have left ULL

I think LSU would have been the only job he woulda left for. He would have been a great hire. Players loved that guy.
PM may never have been hired.

I've met Robe personally many times (his daughter is in my wife's friend circle from HS). He was a great man and he left way to early.
All that said if you look at that hire from every angle he would have been better than what we actually got after Skip.

When did he retire? How long would he have coached for?

Not to discount what Robe did there but it wasn't a ground up deal. The previous coach, Mike Boulanger, had taken the Cajuns to 4 regional appearance. And Boulanger has the highest winning percentage of any UL Lafayette baseball coach. Of course I think the Cajuns play better competition now.
Robe took it to another level, though, and he was a great coach and a better person He was only about 4 months older than me when I was at the time when he passed away, definitely gone way too soon.

If we are being fair though, Boulanger coached a third of the games that Robe did and got swept in 3 of the 4 regionals that he made it to. Robe made it to 4 super regionals and hosted 1. He may not have built it completely from the ground up but I wouldn't say that he inherited a program that was in great shape.

No doubt Robe elevated the program. I remember when Boulanger was leaving and was concerned about what would happen, since the program was finally headed in the right direction. Robe was a godsend.

It was pointed in the right direction but nowhere near where he got it. Make no mistake, Ragin Cajun baseball is the program that Robe built.
