And electric trains are definitely a thing. The problem there is installing and paying for all of the infrastructure. Electric trains are not battery powered due to the insane current demands, so they are supplied by an overhead system called catenary generally.

A few class one railroads have studied electrifying some high density and/or mountain lines and for private enterprise the benefits have not outweighed the costs.

Those are rare compared to diesel powered excavators. The electrics are gargantuan machines used only in the biggest mines. They’re not practical in most mining applications.
