Gas is too expensive unless you are near the tropics (south florida).

Palm trees even die in our zone (louisiana). just gets too cold.

Heat pump can run full time in march/april, and oct/nov.

Keeping it covered to prevent evaporative cooling is key.

Heat pump takes a few days to get up to temp then can maintain. It has a temp delta of about 1 degree (vs gas which is about 6-7 degrees).

3 ton heat pump costs about 20 bucks to run 24/7. So 500/month to heat the pool during the extender months. Forget about "winter" unless you build a florida room or have auto-retract cover.
