We had an udfa 2-3 years ago that did the same thing. He was also an O-Lineman IIRC.

After participating in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp this past week, undrafted rookie free agent offensive lineman Alex Hoffman has reportedly decided to retire and pursue a different career path.
According to a Helena (Montana) Independent Record report, Hoffman's retirement comes on the heels of him finding out he'd been accepted into the St. Louis University medical school.
Hoffman's retirement was initially reported by NO.Football.
A former high school quarterback who led his team a Utah state title, Hoffman blossomed into a stout offensive tackle at Carroll College, finishing his career as a three-year starter and two-time All-Conference player.

You can retire from the nfl without ever being on a team?

Jim Kovach did the same thing in the 80's. He was a pretty good LB for the Saints.

hope he’s personally not a case of “what if I had stuck it out”. That can haunt him the rest of his life.
Medical school will always be there. The NFL won’t

This is awesome. Good for him.

Imagine being so afraid of NFL competition that you would preemptively work your arse off for 4 years in college to graduate at least Magna Cum Laude so you could get accepted into medical school so you wouldn't have to go to an NFL training camp.
