I guess this is the best place to ask about board games. How difficult would this be for a 9 year old to play? It would be him, his teenage sister and me playing but I've never played so I was curious.

I have yet to play Jaws of the Lion, but have played a handful of the original Gloomhaven missions. The game isn't tough to learn how to play, but there is a lot of strategy and planning your turn efficiently.

I guess the bigger question is has this 9 year old played any other board games before? If they have only played roll and move games like Monopoly and Sorry it may be overwhelming for them. If they have some experience with modern designer board games and some experience with dungeon crawls they will be able to better handle the concepts.

This is good advice. If you can't get your hands on a good copy of HeroQuest, I might look at something like Descent first, that might be easier to control.

I do know that the battle system is typically more than a few dice and math for JoTL
