I was just a kid when this guy was drafted and played for the Saints. I am not sure he can be topped as the all time worst draft pick.

For those of you who are too young to know.... he was the 11th pick in the 1979 draft as a kicker and punter. Somehow he stayed on the Saint roster 4 years. I only remember him throwing a pick six in OT against the Falcons on his first pick when the punt went over his head.

Just remember... what ever happens in this draft, it is highly unlikely the Saints can top this crapper as the worst pick in the draft.

82' - #13 WR Lindsay Scott
87' - #11 DT Shawn Knight
96' - #11 DB Alex Molden
97' - #10 OG Chris Naeole
03' - #06 DT Johnathan Sullivan

Erxleben was a beast at Texas! He is the only three-time All-American punter in NCAA history, being a consensus choice in 1976, 1977, and 1978. But yeah, terrible pick at #11!

If and that's a big if Davenport doesn't turn it around he'll go down as the worse because he cost us two 1st rounders.

The list of the Saints' notorious 1st round picks is a long one, starting with the first (Les Kelly) but Erxleben will always be the poster child of it.

Truly awful. He didnt even kick when he played for Saints and his punting was average at best. Had terrible form and was never consistent. Not his fault the Saints picked him first round though! Too bad he couldnt live up to the hype.

That was in his first game of his career, he pulled a hamstring warming up before week 2, missed the rest of the season. Saints signed Garo Yepremian.

The following season he made 2 of 5 FGs, before losing kicking duties. Never made another FG in his career.

Four years after the Saints cut him, he would have just a single punt for the Lions.

My worst memory of Erxleben is the first game of 1980.

Just coming off the 8-8 season and so much promise going into 1980. Erxleben lines up for the game tying field goal at the end of the game against the 49ers-- I think it was like a 25-30yrd field goal and a Miss.
