It's hard to argue against The Splendid Splinter.

.344 career BA, 521 HR, 2654 hits and the last man to hit over .400 in a season in 1941...all while missing nearly FIVE YEARS of playing time to go became a pilot and flight instructor in WWII and was recalled back into the military for Korea where he flew 37 combat missions.

Imagine missing three ENTIRE seasons in the middle half of the beginning of your career after you've already hit .406 (1943, 44, 45) and then most of the 52-53 seasons for Korea?

When guys like Don Mattingly, Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, etc think you're the greatest hitter of all time, who am I to argue?
