I just left them when I did my lawn last year. I’m not sure if it makes a difference either way. If they dissolve and then fill the holes back, it’s still not compacted soil backfilling the holes was my take.

I have about half an acre to do. I plan on using the lawn sweeper to pick them up and fill any low spots. I'd top dress with Mason sand if I were you.
