unload the fricking gun before bringing it home!
There are LOTS of people here who leave their guns loaded all hunting season if not all year. It is an incredibly stupid thing to do. All risk and no reward.
If you aren't using it, unload it.
The old man drilled into our heads that the first thing you do any time you touch any gun is make sure its unloaded and then double or triple check that it is, and periodically check that it still is. shite happens easily enough on its own, dont help it.

I've had 2 friends lose their sons due to hunting accidents by being accidentally shot. One was heading out the woods with a friend right behind him, he crossed a fence and for some reason his friends gun fired and struck the kid in the chest killing him instantly. He was only 18 at the time and a senior in high school.
Another friends son was hunting alone and in a tree stand. From what they can gather, he was leaving the stand and for some unknown reason his gun fired and killed him. He was found at the base of the tree and the bullet retrieved from his body was one from his gun.
Bottom line is if you're done hunting, unload the damn gun. Both these young men would not have died in that manner if just following that advise.

All of my guns are loaded at all times so there is no question whether they are. Someone breaks into my house I ain’t got time to load a gun.
But I keep them locked in a safe and I don’t have little kids or anything
