Jacques hustles, plain and simple.
There's no reason the Advocate writers couldn't have gotten interviews with Woodward and Faneca, but they didn't.
It's because they're complacent, they're lazy. There's no print competition. John Georges bought out the competition (the Times-Pic).
There is, in their minds, no incentive to get off their butts and do any enterprise reporting. Management doesn't have to spend, either. There's no reason to go to the Super Bowl anymore. (Rabalais better enjoy those Masters trips because those will end soon, too).
No media entity in this part of Louisiana is competing with the Advocate for what few advertising dollars there are.
Expect more of the same.
If we had a real newspaper in this town and in New Orleans, they would be doing public records requests to see who LSU was calling during the coordinators searches. They would fly to South Bend and interview Marcus Freeman and see if they could pry some insight out of him.
They would be investigating the Guice and sexual assault scandals, instead of waiting to see what USA Today turns up. (Scooped by USA Today -- not a very proud moment, Advocate).
They would be talking to Board of Supervisor members and getting them on the record about Orgeron (and about Wade). Even if they said nothing, get the Board on the record.
They would interview Jameis Winston and see where he stands. They would try to get an update on Drew Brees and, while they're at it, ask him why he and the Saints never said anything about the multiple injuries he nursed through the season.
So sure, Jacques Doucet is a local treasure. I totally agree.
But to me, it points out how complacent and deficient the local newspaper is.
