It is indeed a real thing. Not sure if they have the real ark, but they believe they do, for sure.

I read, in one of the ancient extra-biblical books( maybe in 1/2/3 Macabees) where they made a copy of the Ark To fool the enemies and most theorists think that the Ethiopians have the copy. Supposedly, the story goes, Jeremiah hide the real one somewhere in Mount Nebo. It really was fascinating to look into this story. I firmly believe that Menelik is actually Solomons son. Do some looking into the history of the Israeli airlift of the tribe of Haile Salassie and their descendants. I know they would not have done that if the story wasn't true.
The Ark was just a type and shadow of Christ and even if the real Ark survived, it means nothing now
