Can someone splain the catfish farm, propeller thingy behind the tractor or what they are trying to do with it?

Aeration. Those pics were the first types used back when the industry started booming in the 70s-80s. Before manufacturers came along to build better aeration, most of it was homemade with truck rear ends and paddles welded up the wheels on a frame with a shaft that connects to tractor PTO or modified relift irrigation pumps to spray water around. As seen some relift pumps were modified to have an electric motor mounted on the front. Or sometimes a lister petter diesel engine.

Later the sidewinder (in the last pic) was developed using a cotton picker bullgear. Then electric aeration using a 10hp motor and paddle rotor mounted on floats. All types are still used today but much bigger and more reliable

Modern types

Remember it well, along with the channels shutting down at midnight and only having a test pattern with a constant drone for sound after they played the National Anthem.

Yeah, all 4 channels here in N.O. at the time---CBS, NBC, ABC and PBS. And if I remember right, they were channel 4, 6, 8 and 12 in the above order.

Edited: The above station were the National Affiliates and the local channels were WWL, WDSU, WVUE and WYES respectively.

WDSU was the first to air locally in December of 1948.

These are DeSoto models. They were a division of Chrysler Corporation from 1928 to 1961.

Kinda goofy to name some product that you want people to believe will always get them back home after an explorer who didn’t come back (Amelia Earhart brand luggage kindasorta too).

Fun Fact: There is a County in Mississippi named DeSoto, the County seat is named after his first name. So it’s Hernando DeSoto Mississippi.

Funner Fact: DeSoto died where present-day Ferriday is, best guess.

This event was actually in Ascension Parish at Galvez off of LA 44. There was literally nothing there in 1969.
