I think this is a great place for a promising young DC, however, I can totally understand the risk factor by some being considered a bit higher. Did you watch us on defense this year? It is possibly to be a combination of coordination and talent instead of just Pelini lol. With that being said I think we do have a lot of young talent combined with some great returning experience. Cox coming back would have been huge, but very unlikely as he made the right decision in declaring for the draft. Hoping Freeman, or whoever comes in as DC, can mold this talent back into a formidable defense!

There is risk involved in taking a job on Ed Orgeron's staff. For whatever reason, there has been a lot of turnover on that staff and, recently, turmoil in the locker room. Last year was an historically awful performance by the team and the defense in particular. The HC has also done a poor job of roster management to date, and while there is elite talent at some positions, some are thin and there are simply not enough scholly players.
Other risks include NCAA sanctions and the Title IX investigation.
Truth is Ed's judgement and maturity are also a risk and may be the cause of some of the issues above.
But, we can pay a lot of money.
Freeman is a hot property, and he doesn't have to take big risks.

I would not come to LSU.

You fire a Coach after one year while changing defenses, no spring training, you best player misses 3.5 games, 3 starters opt out, loses several other to the draft, don't let the coach recruit athletes to fit his scheme...not to mention the missing games, moving home games, etc...

And they fire you!

Best wishes Freeman...don't come here...most of our fans suck!

unless he knows fickell is leaving and he has the inside track for the job, you don't pass up ND or LSU.

Unless Luke Fickell brainwashes him to stay at Cincy, then I don't know why Freeman would not want to go to LSU with all the talent we have.

I want Freeman as badly as anyone, but I do think there are reasons why he might prefer to stick at cincy. I don't necessarily think these reasons will outweigh the reasons to come to LSU, but I also don't think it's totally out of the question that someone in Freeman's spot would choose to stay put.

Basically 104.5 nailed it. If Freeman stays at Cincy, it won't cause him to lose out on an opportunity for a P5 DC gig--because eventually Fickell will jump, and he will have the choice of either following him, or taking over as HC himself at Cincy. If he follows Fickell to whatever p5 stop fickell jumps to, he will have a LOT longer of a leash than he'd have at LSU. Success under fickell at whatever P5 job Fickell takes won't net him the same caliber of HC opportunities that success as DC at LSU would net him, but he also won't be at much risk of being let go. If freeman takes the LSU job, he will either rocket up the list of blue chip rising star HC candidates, or he will tank his perception and his career will take a big hit. If he wants to bet on himself, he'll come to LSU. If he wants to play it safe and hitch his wagon to Fickell, he'll stay at cincy.

Agrre. If he stays it’s not so much about LSU, but the tough competition in the SEC and staying is simply playing it safe. But you also must consider Fickle would take him back if he failed.

Yeah I mean this is certainly possible--but I'm also not sure that Fickell would fire someone in a major position just to reunite with his former DC who is coming off a high-profile failure. If he got ditched by LSU after, say, 2 years, Fickell would likely be finishing up his first year as a P5 HC, and would likely be 1 year into a relationship with a new DC that he likely hand-picked. Unless that new guy was an absolute disaster in year 1 (which is possible!) then i think it would be pretty unlikely he'd be fired in that circumstance. Maybe he'd be able to take freeman on as LBs coach. He certainly would have an analyst position waiting for him, but based on what i know of freeman, he wouldn't be too happy about taking such a low-level gig.
