The 'Aliens' are simply programmers that must visit Earth for 'fieldwork' from time to time when our simulation requires tweaking.
Mostly joking but how would you handle the tall task of informing the public if that were really the situation. If you die in this world (simulation), you're just put in the queue for the next simulation adventure.
