that has always been my Christmas Vacation problem. Apparently Illinois looked like Colorado in the 80s.
I just googled it, and a lot of the movie actually was filmed in Breckenridge. Here is the link to the website that I read:

While the background us a bit extreme in the movie, if you head NW of Chicago towards Dubuque, IA the area around Galena, IL and up north into Wisconsin to LaCrosse, WI looks like that picture.
