Walt Cunningham, Apollo VII astronaut, told me a story about the Omega Speedmaster he wore to space. When the astronauts returned, he had to turn it in, it was government property. Instead, he went and purchased another one, and swapped it out. He wanted to keep the one he took to space.

Five years later, he got busted, when NASA audited the watches, and discovered that Walt's Omega didn't include a small numbered engraving on the back that it should have. They contacted him and forced him into admitting it and he had to return the watch to NASA.
