I've rented on AnnaMaria Island off Tampa/St. Pete/Bradenton. Reasonable prices. No tall buildings, no fast food joints (unless you cross a bridge to the mainland. Family owned fresh seafood restaurants, grocery store. Bicycles to tool around if you want. Likely a few degrees more pleasant than the panhandle.

AND the best thing about it is an awesome beach that faces the sunset! Little club to get a drink, kick your feet up, and hear a little live music while watching the sun go down. Check it out.

Annamaria is a solid choice but not panhandle. I have spent many nights drinking at the Ugly Grouper.

I would look at Grayton Beach. Always a favorite of mine. Low key still but great beach/food/bars.
