CDC explained this early in the pandemic.
They said that since the info on mask effectiveness wasn't clear, wearing a mask was as much a demonstration of your willingness to "practice good hygeine" and "follow medical advice" than it was actually protecting yourself and others.
Seriously.
Just obey guys.
