How would it be the dumbest? He will still be a 1st rounder next year unless he gets fat or gets into legal trouble. The much bigger risk would be to play and run the chance of injury or a bad season.
Huge bummer for us fans but try to put yourself in his position. If you were in a situation in your career where you could potentially lose out on millions of dollars, would you do that? I know it's a cliche when players say "I have to do what's best for my family" but it's actually the truth.
