Help with buying new Nintendo Switch Joy Con controllers

I'm sure we have a bunch of Switch folks on this board. I have one for my 9 year old, so I never play it and really don't know much about it.
He's had it about 2 years or so. The original joy con controllers had that issue that seemed popular where it would always point up even if you weren't touching the controller. I couldn't figure out how to fix it so about 3 months ago I bought him new ones. I went the cheap route finding some off brand/new ones for $30 or so.
Those have already crapped out as well, with the L1(or whatever it's called) button not being able to be pressed at all any more.
My question is for a 9 year old who isn't going to take the best care of these things, what's the best route for me to go? Should I just pay $60-70 or whatever it is to get the official Nintendo Switch brand controllers? And/or would that come with a warranty that would cover something breaking like buttons not working properly?

Those were first gen controllers that had the issue. Just get some new ones and you should be good.
Nintendo is usually super solid with hardware outside of little annoyances like that. Additionally, the Pro Controller is a bit sturdier than the Joycons and can be used for a lot of games. Granted, you can't do some of the motion specific games like Arms and what not, but that controller is more built for heavy every day gaming.

Go to Nintendo.com and start a service ticket for the original joy cons. You can send them back and they will fix them for free. Took a month to send mine in and get them back. I don’t think they even fixed mine. It looks like they just sent me new ones.

Gotcha, thanks
He actually likes to hold and play it as opposed to playing it on the TV.
I'll try to send the originals back and see if I get new/free ones sent back my way.

I just sent mine in a few weeks ago and received them. I thought that they were still broken, but I recalibrated them and they work great.
I did the online form, but got an email the next day that I needed to call them. I called and the guy seemed unsure why I was told to call. But he took care of everything over the phone. Overall pretty easy and best of all, free.

If you are even slightly handy, you can replace the joystick part of the controller in about 5 minutes.
This is what I did for my son's after he broke one of the joysticks. Got generic part kit off Amazon for like $15 and swapped it out in just a few minutes. No issues since.

We sent our originals in about a month ago that actually lasted for four years before drifting so badly it was debilitating. We got what looks and feels like new ones with the same cover just two and a half weeks later. They were great.

I got the same kit. Had all the tools you needed.
