It is you missing his point, which was that we all have a tendency to stick with our team no matter what. He wasn’t making the point that Trump was a perennial loser. If he was, a better rebuttal is that Trump won in 2016.
Whoever Jim Gaffigan is, he is a shallow dummy, but there was nothing wrong with his metaphor.
