This is the right answer. If he wanted to keep his job, the only play would have been to have come out during his on air "apology".

The guy was clearly joking around with his broadcast crew. It's not like he went on some serious anti-gay rant. Fox Sports freaked out and made this a much bigger deal than it had to be.

If he would have called someone on the crew that name, he may have survived. Using it in the context he did was always going to make it a big deal. It was all over Twitter before his apology.

It's a shame a guy would lose his job over that. People need to stop allowing things to offend them.

He already apologized on air. Said that’s not who he is, which is hilarious because that’s exactly who he is when he thinks the mic is off. He may not think it’s a big deal, but it’s clearly a word he says on a regular basis.

I hate when people apologize like this. We all say shite in private that we wouldn’t say publicly. He should have used the Trump “pussy tape” route and just said it was private “locker room talk” and apologize if he offended anyone.

On February 5, 2010, Brennaman was chastised for commenting that Marshall University's president must be "queer" for softball

I can remember back in the day some folks were speculating the reason the Cubs got rid of him was that he and Steve Stone were having a thing.
Seems to be a running thing with this guy. Maybe he really is gay.

That was his dad who said the "queer" line.

When talking in private with friends, almost every slur is used in many conversations. Malicious? No, just good ole boy bullshitting and hosing each other or others outside of the convo. No harm.
He just happened to say fig at the worse time ever. He gone.

I felt the same way when Howard Cosell got in hot water (I think fired) with MNF for what he said during a broadcast. Art Monk was running for a TD and Cosell said, "look at that monkey run." He claimed that he used that term all the time when referring to lean, nimble people, like when his grandkids are playing around. I truly believe it wasn't a racial slur slip. But it got him in trouble anyway, and that was back in the late 70s, early 80s.

It's kind of sad to me that's all it takes to end a 30+ year career. PC culture is utterly disgusting to me.

He groveled to much at the end. Asking folks to stand-up for him. Say your sorry, be done with it.
