This is disturbing for an engineer. I'm in aerospace field, I'm an engineer, and have engineers all around me, they are predominantly conservative. I'm also in Texas so that makes a difference.

But engineers use logic and reasoning skills and think things out to the end. He is obviously not this type of engineer.

THIS!!!! You described him as "very liberal". I can understand, maybe, a Democrat-leaning engineer, I suppose, but it is difficult to imagine a bat-shite-crazy, deranged-Leftist engineer.
So which is he?

I graduated 1998 in Mechanical Engineering at LSU, and I was on Engineering Council, and I met/knew many dozens of engineers from LSU and our region (LA, TX, OK, KS etc.).
I NEVER ONCE met a hardcore left-leaning engineer or engineering student.
Democrats? Very few.
Leftists? Zero.

Your brother in law must be one fricking shitty engineer if he falls into that latter category. Because thoughtful approaches to problem-solving and deranged-Leftism are incompatible.
