Notice the term movie, so this does not not include True Detective (which, I think everyone agrees is Matt's best performance and part of this period).

So when does the McConaissance actually begin and end?

I say it begins at Lincoln lawyer and ends when he wins the Oscar. So that discludes Interstellar.

The list:

The Lincoln Lawyer
Bernie
Killer Joe
Mud
Magic Mike
The Paperboy
Dallas Buyers Club
The Wolf of Wall Street

...

Wolf of Wall Street is a cameo, but he's incredible.

Mud is my favorite of this period.

His performance in DBC was transformative and he and Leto really made magic in that film, though many on this board will hate it just for the content.

Mud is also up there. I recently watched it for the first time and thought it was fantastic.

My 3rd would be Lincoln Lawyer. I'd love to see them do more of the series.

Killer Joe is the most underrated thriller of the last 10 years. His performance is so intimidating and anxiety inducing. You’re just waiting for him to snap at any minute.

Movie: Bernie and it isn't even close.

I think he'd rather us all forget about The Paperboy

I thought Leto carried DBC.

Just because you have a Cartman movie, doesn't mean you were great.

I mean that is Leto's best performance.

But "best movie/role"? Given the combination it's Lincoln Lawyer...Mud is just not as good a movie.

Mud was a fun role/movie, but DBC is the answer. Not really a debate either.

DBC easily. I think his performance in Interstellar gets swept under the rug because of how good he was in DBC, Mud, etc. but he was fantastic in Interstellar also.

I thought it was ok, but overrated here. I think some movies get a bump on TD due to setting. The boys were very well written but the plot was pretty boring and vanilla.

This board loves Mud.

I really like Mud. I've rewatched it more than Dallas Buyers Club. But, his best performance was Dallas Buyers Club.

I honestly didn't remember him in Bernie. Jack Black stole the show in that one.

For me it is Killer Joe. That is a severely underrated movie.

It’s Bernie but others are pretty close IMO.

It’s a smaller role but he crushed it

this. i still listen to the soundtrack and can catch the moments of "don't go" when he's balling his eyes out driving away from his daughter or landing the shuttle saying "no, but it's necessary" without seeing the video.

he and Hathaway did a great job in that movie. too bad it was lost on some BSC plot twist with 15 minutes remaining.
