why would anyone take the tarp over the tent?

Tarp could be used for more things than the tent, and would likely hold up better. It could be used for shelter, could be used as a hammock to keep you off the ground. It can collect rain water easily. Strips could be cut for cordage or tourniquets. It could be used to help move/pack things. A tarp can do alot.

I would argue the exact opposite

The tent can do much more. It collects water, isolates from weather and insects, and is supported by flexible poles, which could serve many other purposes.

Should the tent be damaged or become unnecessary once a permanent structure is made, it could be used for its basic materials, including netting

Tent > Tarp
