Getting ready for a boat trip there this coming weekend. Any general information would be appreciated as I have not been there for several tears. Thanks in advance for any info.

We usually camp there a half dozen or so times a year and I fish it a bit, why are you going and what are your questions?

Boats will be stacked toward the west side peninsula. It's a big island. If you want a little privacy go around to the south side and head east until you find a good spot. Bring 2 anchors for sure. You'll want to anchor front facing south and back toward the beach. You'll see that most are anchored this way. Watch for young kids on jet skis. I personally have never been approached about a MS fishing license but I have seen MS WL & Fisheries out there approaching boaters on numerous occasions so don't be surprised if they stop your boat on the way out or in. Best launch is the biloxi public marina but there is another smaller launch about a half mile east if public marina is full. Keep a close eye on weather. If the wind picks up be ready to pack up and roll. The sound gets dangerous choppy real quick. Have fun and be safe.

Was there yesterday.

Water was GORGEOUS on the Gulf side:

Pevious poster was correct; day trippers congregate in HUGE numbers on the ends of the island (West AND East) on the Sound side. You can find a less crowded spot along the middle.

Boating and anchoring on the south (Gulf) side, though, is not generally a good idea in the summer time as the prevailing winds are out of the south (from the open Gulf), and crashing surf a la Destin or Pensacola can be common.

There's some big tall dunes near the east end. There are several trails to cross the island from Sound to Gulf side even in wooded sections; the easiest one is almost a dirt road at the ranger station dock in about the middle of the island. Just look for the huge cable supported antenna.

Best launch sites depend on where on the island you are headed (it IS 12 miles long). For the west side of the island, Biloxi and Ocean Springs Harbors are good. For the eastern part of the island, launches in Gautier or Pascagoula are closest.

Haven't fished out there, but have done some surveys over it this weekend and water looked great recently, especially compared to further West.
