That being said, I think you have to raise the bar so high, that it is almost impossible to get your number retired. When someone finally does get their number retired it is for a damn good reason. Billy Cannon: Heisman winner and unquestionably one of the best college football players of all time.
For example, Chad Pennington and Randy Moss never won a Heisman or a National Championship, and there might be several players better than them in the future at Marshall. But they were both extraordinarily instrumental in raising Marshall's program to literally another level. That's something only one or two other players will ever be able to do at Marshall.
Likewise, there is virtually zero chance that any player in LSU Football will ever even have the opportunity to do as much for our program as Faulk did, let alone actually come through and achieve what he did. The contribution he made to this program was truly Billy Cannon-like.

I agree. Faulk helped turn us aroung and push us in the right direction. What about Y.A. Tittle?
