But no, despite living in the south and attending a Deep South school I’ve never met anyone who was in the KKK or any white supremacy group.

I think members rarely come from normal middle class whites. They’re either a group of criminal white trash or a few well connected wealthy people in rural small towns who keep it very very secret. The latter was more common decades ago, today it’s more of the former.
