No, they didn't. Since at least the 90s the vast majority of the Super Bowl watching crowd couldn't care less about the game itself.

The Super Bowl is a cultural event more than a sporting event.

The phrase you are looking for is "couldn't care less"

When you say they "could care less" about the Super Bowl that means they do care if there is a possibility to care less
