As a side hobby I operated between 150-250 head of beef cattle.... The bottleneck causing beef prices consist of the lack of beef processing centers operating at capacity therefore higher demand for beef and higher prices being demanded by processors. This creates maximum supply at the feedlots thus lowering price per pound for cattle farmers. Buy from a local beef producer and have it processed yourself. It’s rather easy.

It’s this. There is plenty of beef to process, they just don’t have anyone to process it.

I was walked through this process and cattle farmer in Montana sells his cattle to feed lot feed lot fattens them up to get weight on them sells again to makes money. Why the hell would you pay taxes maintain a 15k acre ranch that you can accomplish with a feed lot? Why every cattle farmer should just convert to feed lots?

We've done this several times over the years. Usually, we split a cow and a hog with family friends. All of it is too much for us to deal with at one time, plus we save a little money by splitting cost.
