They wanted to know exactly what he was up to. That’s when they realized Zayed was being used as a back channel by the incoming Trump Administration. It’s totally understandable as several Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee have admitted.

Even if true (it likely isn’t) they were effectively spying on the transition
