We get that. But there is no reason to get into the whole mental gymnastics of trying to make it sound like he said something brilliant.

This is the real issue. You either have the Trump apologists trying to spin whatever he says into 58D chess or the Q people saying he's speaking in some sort of code.

the absurd part isn't whether it was brilliant or not but the fact it's being covered at all.
That is the scam the left has pulled with the media. if a liberal says something stupid it just doesn't get covered or it gets barely mentioned.
So liberals never really have to defend anything because they get 100% free passes
Meanwhile if a republican says something ill-advised it's going to be covered for the next 3 nights with panels of so-called journalist discussing the ins-and-outs of the comment.
If we had actual journalism in this country it might be different but we don't
