As a society, if we renamed "non-profit" institutions to "non-tax paying" institutions, it would be more honest and clear. They still have revenue and profits, they just don't pay taxes on the profits. I also think the term "non-profit" makes it sound like they're accomplishing some benevolent mision and the definition of a non-profit needs to be reigned in.
If you care about whatever you're buying, be it health care or any other goods or services, I would much rather go to a for-profit hospital than a non-profit. The for profit business will always deliver a better and more efficient service than a non-profit competitor.
