So my push mower starts, runs very shortly then dies. Pulled the air filter off and it ran and continued to run, so I went and bought a new filter. Put the new filter in and it does the same start then quit thing. WTH?

Sounds like the carburetor needs to be cleaned

When it starts, are you choking it extra? Sounds like it’s not getting enough gas. Possible the lines are clogged, your Carb float needs adjusted to allow more gas, or that your throttle needs adjusted.

Eta: re read about running with filter off sorry. Usually that means the air/ fuel mixture is off. If it’s the filter, it’s getting too much gas for the filter mix. If it’s too much gas the filter removed adds more oxygen.

So it’s likely getting too much gas, the float needs adjusted to reduce the gas or throttle adjusted to run better with current mixture.

Had that problem with my tiller one time. Cleaned carb, jets same problem. I actually had too much oil in the crankcase. Would start, run 1/2 minute and die. Changed the oil with the proper amount, it immediately purred like a kitten. I had no idea that too much oil would react like that. Now you know.

My brother swears by Mechanic in a Bottle to clean the carb. May be easier than taking apart.

Had mine do the same thing a few weeks ago. It was old gas i had put into the tank. Drained the tank, added new gas and ran like a charm. Just a thought.

Check your spark plug. If you were running rich you probably fouled a plug. So you can pull it off and clean it with a wire brush

My mower did the same thing last summer. I removed the bolt at the bottom of the float bowl and cleaned out the jet with a small wire and carb cleaner. Used a pair of vice grips to pinch off the gas line before removing the bowl. That did the trick.
