I think the only teams that should get automatic bids are the regular season champs. They proved over the course of the season that they should be the rep. A 2-14 team should not be able to get in because they luck out and win 4 games in a knockout tournament (where they may not even have to play the best teams).

Well they are to a certain extent, just not automatically to the NCAA tournament

First off, how often does this actually happen?

Even so, it seems rather fitting with the way the actual championship is determined.

That being said, I don't care for conference tournaments that don't provide any benefit for the teams that finished at the top of the league (home court, mulitple byes, etc). I do think some of that needs to change.

If teams all played the same schedule in conferences then sure, great idea. But they dont. Conference schedules are unbalanced majority of the time because of the large number of teams in each.
