I mean the coaches have obviously decided to have the returner fair catch kickoffs no matter what. If thats not, not trying, IDK what is.

You are so backwards on this. They are actually trying really hard by not returning kicks. Think deeper man....

Nick Saban famously said that he was satisfied if every offensive possession ended with a kick. The implication is that even a punt can be a successful series.

Two subtle points:
#1 - Ball security is paramount. Do not turn the ball over.

#2 - If we start every drive at the 25 (i.e. if we fair catch every kick off) and get one first down, it is likely that we will be able to flip the field and cause our opponent to have a less advantageous starting position than we did.
