Honestly, if you are in possession of a food stamp card, either you are gaming the system, or you suck at life.

Except for those who are disabled in some way.

I don't necessarily disagree, but there are people who fall on hard times. If those people have a family and need support, that's the purpose of the program.

Able bodied and unemployed folks with no dependents can volunteer until they have a job. If they can't do that minimum amount of volunteering, they do not deserve the help.

Agree, but for many, it's a lifestyle.

Agreed and I’m absolutely fine with that. I agree that if you aren’t willing to do anything at all then it’s hard to feel sorry for them. I don’t know everyone’s unique circumstances though and who knows it could be anything from lack of transport to an undiagnosed mental illness to who knows what. What bothers me is the widespread belief that people on food stamps by and large are lazy, most aren’t anything of the sort.

What I do support is reform of the program so that things like soda, cookies, hot pockets etc can’t be purchased with it. The poor are in need of quick calories and I get that, but we should be funneling them towards better and healthier eating habits. We should be doing that for everyone but for sure the ones taxpayer dollars are helping. Otherwise we are simply helping them into medical issues down the line.

Put more money into the food stamp program but require a certain nutritional value from it. Doesn’t need to be overly complicated because that simply adds to the admin cost, but eliminate "junk" food.

And yeah I’m all for recipients doing volunteer work. Give them bags to go pick up trash even, there’s nothing at all wrong or degrading about that. These are our fellow citizens though and in a blink of an eye we could find ourselves in their situation. Helping to feed them and not treating them like like lazy scum should be a no brainer. The food stamp program is one of the things good about the government, forgot a couple F35s or a new submarine and help feed your fellow man.
