Have any of you rented a car at the Florence SM Novella train station? I read that it is difficult to get in and out of there and that you need an international drivers permit. Which car rental companies did you use? We are spending a few days in Tuscany and figured I would rent a car to get around. Any advice would be appreciated.

Florence is tough to get in and out of because they have lanes that are off limit for use at certain times of the day. It's very confusing if you aren't used to the road signs there. It's a rite of passage to have received a driving violation ticket from Florence months after your trip.

Once you're out of town driving is very easy. The only thing to really keep an eye out for is bicyclists because there are a lot of them.
