It’s popular because of course people would love to get some stuff owned by others
But wealth taxes have an absolutely horrid track record
Of 15 European nations that tried them, 12 eventually repealed them because they raised zero revenue and ended up harming the economy.

I used to think that. But after a lot of IRL conversations with co-workers who were left wing Dems I am convinced that they harbor no illusions that rich people's money will be transferred to them.
They simply want the rich to be soaked because it would make them feel good.
