Son's first gun

I'm looking for ways to get my son (10 y/o) outside and away from the screens a bit more. He likes to fish, but my boat is in Venice and that's a two day ordeal. I want something that we can do for a couple hours on the weekend and was thinking about getting him started with shooting at the range. I'm not a gun guy at all, but I used to hunt when I was a kid from time to time.
Any advice for a rimfire rifle and scope setup for around $300-400? I promised that whatever we get won't kick at all....let's just say he's a bit sensitive, and I don't want him to get turned off by a bad first experience.

Ruger 10/22, you can do a lot with these guns. 22's don't kick at all and ammo is dirt cheap. Can kill small game and fun to plink at targets

I second the Ruger 10/22. You can keep it simple or dress them up as much as you want to.
Mine is a tack driver.

Ruger 10/22 with a BSA sweet 22 scope.

Ruger 10/22 or M&P 15-22.
The M&P is damn fun.

I'm coming up on 40k rounds through mine. Zero malfunctions.
In a .22 that is insane.

I'm not generally a Ruger fan but it's hard to argue against the 10/22. I think the CZ rimfires are much better rifle but at a little more money.

Agree with the Ruger 10/22 recommendations. Good rifles with plenty of accessories for customization.
Also consider the Henry Youth models: the Goldenboy is a bit above your price range but the Lever Action .22 (Model H001Y) is in your price range (Academy has a good price).
Additionally, the lever action is pretty sweet and if your son is left eye dominant, the lever action is ambidextrous.

Anyone mention a 10/22 yet? Seriously though, I have one and they are a great little rifles. I put a 40$ Simmons rimfire scope on it with weaver see through rings for the open sights. Perfect for your sons first gun.

That's what I wanted for my kids but my wife didn't want to spend that much. I can't blame her. We got them a bolt action Savage and that thing is very accurate but the 10rd mag sucks sticking out of the bottom.

The M&P has got a lot going for it. I'd buy 1 if I was in the market for a .22 rimfire. It may be a .22 but it is still an AR and that aftermarket is phenomenal.

Thanks for the replies.
Just figured out he’s left eye dominant, is the lever action definitely the way to go?

I wouldn't get the MP15. Too many whack job parents out there that would probably label you son if they saw a picture of him holding it. Get the 10-22.

Lot's of fine 22's out there including Ruger and Henry. I have the Browning 22 auto and would not trade it for anything.
