I only watched the first one and I made an improvement edit on the spot - just have the "My precious" scene with Gollum and Bilbo - have occasional interruptions of sound from the battle in the goblin city, and then have Bilbo come outside and see the Dwarves all fricked up - dented helmets, bruised, dirty, arms in slings, broken weapons, etc., and say, "What happened to you guys?"

Makes the movie cheaper and better. Win-win.
