Because a committee makes those at-large selections (with auto bids given to conf champs).

You do realize that a selection committee comprised of numerous people from different conferences is far superior to the BCS formula (2/3 human polls, 1/3 computer). And just remember that the formulas the computers use are programmed by HUMANS, and there's no agreement on what factors should be considered by the computers, and how much to weight each factor.

Give me a serious selection committee all day long over a computer.

i 100% disagree with you. As evidence this year is Clemson. there should be no remembrance of last year. yet they remain #1 in most polls when an unranked UNC almost beat them. that alone should drop them to the bottom of the unbeatens.

March Madness has 64 teams and the NIT to back that up.
