I liked the BCS's system of putting together the rankings. I'd be fine with just implementing that into the current system, instead of just using some random group of people voting.

We shouldn't get in the playoff - because we didn't win our conference?
Playoffs, in every major sport, reward conference/division winners with auto playoff bids, but also include deserving wild card teams - because leagues know that championship calibre teams may not have won their conference, for a variety of reasons.
But that shouldn't automatically exclude them from the playoffs.
