They were meaningless in the BCS era. The BCS and College Football playoff made/make the matchups to determine the National Champion. If you aren't in those games, you are just playing for pride and a trophy.

If you want other bowl games to mean something, you'd gave to go back to the pre-BCS era where everyone plays in Bowl games based on where they finish in their conference. SEC/Big 12 Champs to the Sugar; Big 10/Pac 12 Champs to the Rose; and the ACC Champ to the Orange. Then, let things fall as they will. The #1 and #2 teams may not play in a bowl game, and you could have 3 undefeated teams making a claim as National Champ at season's end.
