The only thing about conference champs only is putting in the best teams.
well "best" teams is 100% subjective, conference champs is clear and objective. The other grossly overlooked thing about "best" teams is conference championship games are held against teams that lose it while others benefit from not playing in it.

ake the majority of the human element out of the process and use the BCS system to set the top 8
The BCS was 2/3 human polls, which BTW are grossly inferior to the committee th other 1/3 is computer formulas, which are created by humans. Determining the best teams is not a science, it's not a provable fact (if it was, then why waste time even playing the games). I don't like 8, i think 4 is fine but if you got to 8, ditch the CCG and take the 5 conference champs and 3 at large or perhaps 1 spot for a Grp of 5 team if they meet certain criteria and 2 at large.

Expand it to six teams. Top 6 conference champs selected by a computer system are seeded. The top 2 get a bye and a second round home game. The 3/4 get a first round home game.
Get rid of second chances/wild cards and your SOS makes your playoff route much different.
You are mainly rewarding the media darlings with the wildcards anyways.
Also in the game of football with limited games compared to number of teams, we just respect the full season conference tournaments to pare down the field.
