Go with a 2012-16 Honda CRV. Reliable, large amount of space for the segment, solid handling for a crossover, CVT engine that gets you going fast enough to merge onto the highway but won't blows the doors off enticing teenage joyriding.

No way. You want a gen2(.5) crv with that legendary k24 motor that has no timing belt and was built in Japan.

I bought one for my daughter for college with 150k miles and took it to the dealer to inspect and give me a list of 100 things I needed to do and they said "everything looks perfect". It's a damn good starter car.
