It's just an indicator of talent level and gives a foundation to make assumptions about power level of a team. For instance, if LSU could do what they did to UGA last year with not as good a o-line and a first year Joe Burrow, one can reasonably assume certain things to make an educated decision for LSU ahead of UGA

agree(see about a thousand texas posts!) but factoring in last year is what they do, so georgia shouldn't be ranked that high, but, as previously mentioned, it's meaningless with the playoff system(and this early in the year it always was)
