If you find a place near the commuter train (red line), you can probably stay further away from downtown and that train brings you straight downtown. It may be crowded though.

I believe the main downtown commute train is down or limited currently as they build a new station in that area.

OP, if you can't stay downtown, look at some of the hotels near the I-35 / US-290 interchange. There is a Holiday Inn, a Crowne Plaza, and a Best Western all booking for less than $200 per night, and it's just a short ride down 35 to campus.
